Calculating Dividend Per Share
Some companies choose to retain earnings for future growth prospects. Other businesses choose to pay out regular dividends to shareholders. Does Canada provide good opportunity for investors wanting to invest in blue chip dividend paying stocks?
The Irony of High Yield Dividends
Before we discuss Canada we must ask a pertinent question: which stocks generally have the highest yielding dividends? Often they are companies that have experienced a massive decline in share price.
For instance, a company trading at $100 per share offers an annual dividend of $3 per share. Over the course of a year the share price falls in half. The dividend now looks extremely lucrative at 6% yield. The sad reality is that the plummeting share price makes the payout appear artificially high. A further risk is posed since the company may suspend future dividends until they can boost share prices.
